Seattle Journal of Environmental Law (SJEL)
SJEL is the newest law journal at Seattle University and is the FIRST environmental law journal in Washington. SJEL is the next generation of law journals, replacing the traditional print publication with an online format. Published on a rolling basis, SJEL will provide readers with shorter, timelier writing on today’s most pressing environmnetal issues. By focusing on how environmental law intersects with other disciplines, SJEL’s scholarship will focus on the importance of environmental protections in business, international transactions, and land use.
Mission: SJEL’s mission is to create an environmetnal law journal that takes an innovative approach to traditional Law Review-type scholarship, resulting in top-rate environmental scholarship focusing on the interdisciplinary nature of environmental law and policy.
History: SJEL is the next step in the process that was started in 2004 by the Environmental Law Society. The ELS published ‘Perspectives,’ a quarterly newsletter containing short articles by students and faculty. The articles dealt with environmental law topics ranging from indian law issues to natural resource and land use law, to international law and climate change. Out of ‘Perspectives’ grew Bellwether: The Seattle Journal for Environmental Law and Policy. Bellwether was published in Spring of 2009. SJEL encompasses the traditional Law Review-type journal aspirations of Bellwether, but will incorporate them into an online product that will be the template for law school journals in the future. Stay tuned!
